"In January 2005 four student SAIWI members and a faculty advisor traveled in Plantanilla, Panama. Two former members of SAIWI who are now Peace Corps Volunteers in Panama hosted the group and organized activities in Plantanilla (on the eastern frontier, in the Darien province). Group members worked in separate teams to construct composting latrines. The latrines represent a substantial improvement in hygiene and sanitation. In this region water tables are very close to the land surface. In some low-lying areas raw sewage can be carried to the surface when water tables rise. One of the goals of the trip was to establish a working relationship that could become the foundation for future SAIWI efforts. This visit led to several good possibilities for continuing collaborative work with Peace Corps - Panama." Courtesy Mark Walker
