In the spring semester of 2004, two sections of GEOL 702z were
taught by Ron Petersen and Cathy Fitzgerald. Each section consisted of
two components: an overview of geophysical techniques commonly applied in
rural Africa and a day of hands-on training with a resistivity meter,
and a well-drilling component specifically geared towards using the
LS-100 drill rig.
The following photos were from the first section's drill-rig training,
which took place on the University Farm.
Gitane uses a breakout wrench to detached the drill pipe from the rig so that additional pipe can be added.
Mike performs the role of lead driller, operating the rig's controls.
JB performs his duties as site foreman.
Jason adds bentonite to increase the drilling mud's viscosity.
Jason demonstrates that if his drilling career doesn't pan out, he'll always have a place in disco.
DeEtta samples water from the newly installed well.
