Causes & Prevention:

Automobiles
Vehicles are one of the number one causes of TBI hospitalization.

Measures that can be taken to prevent TBI include:
  • always wearing a seatbelt
  • using car seats for children and following age and height recommendations
  • placing children under 12 in the backseat where they will not be harmed by the airbag
  • never driving if under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • not riding in a car with someone who is under the influence
  • not allowing others to drive under the influence
Sports
&
Recreation

Many sports accidents result in some sort of head injury.

Measures that can be taken to prevent injury while playing sports include:

Always wearing a helmet

  • riding a bike, motorcycle, scooter, or skateboard
  • roller skating, or roller blading
  • skiing or snow boarding
  • horseback riding
  • white water rafting
  • football
  • ice hokey
  • baseball and softball

Make sure that when children are at the playground the equipment is safe and that the surface below the equipment is shock absorbent. There should always be an adult watching.



         

Falls

Falls are the second cause for TBI hospitalization.

Measures that can be taken to prevent falls are:

  • non-slip mats on bathtub and shower
  • grab bars in showering area
  • using stools or ladders
  • wearing shoes with good non-stick soles
  • making sure things are off the floor so people don't trip
  • make sure there are handrails on stairs
  • using safety gates with children
  • make sure windows are closed, or secure so that children don't fall
Firearms

Firearms are the second number one cause of TBI hospitalization:

Measures that can be taken to prevent gun shoot related head injury are:

  • storing guns unloaded in a locked area
  • storing bullets separate from the guns themselves
